Bee Zentangles
This is a fairly uncomplicated project that almost always turns out perfectly. It calls for minimal supplies and ends with a finished masterpiece that is fit for a State Capitol!
What is a zentangle?
Zentangle is an American method for drawing. It not only promotes concentration and creativity but is also known to promote personal well-being. Zentangle was invented by a monk named Rick Roberts and an artist named Maria Thomas. With Zentangle they created a combination of meditation and art. In addition, this art style and form is often used in self-help therapy, making it a perfect project for students.
How to Use Zentangle Art in Your Classroom
First, you’ll want to choose a simple shape to outline. In our case, we used bees. It’s also up to you what kind of base you want to use for the project. I opted in for a white tagboard. Then, they drew patterns in it similar to a Zentangle. They used liquid watercolor in spray bottles for the background. When it was dry they traced their lines with a permanent marker.
Supplies You Need:
tagboard
permanent marker
liquid watercolor
spray bottles
Depending on the age group of your students, you may want to walk them through each step, showing them how to do it and having them follow after you. Older students can typically follow oral directions and use a pre-done project as a guide.
Several of my student’s works were on display at the state capitol for a while! How exciting!? Check with your local museum, the state capitol, or other large places of business to see if they would showcase some of your student’s zentangles.
